Shortly after four o'clock Wednesday afternoon death came as a gentle
release to Mrs. Sam Johnson, 53, who had suffered an unconquerable
malady for several years finally succumbing after many long weeks of suffering.
Before her marriage to Mr. Johnson 25
years ago she was Theressa Devaughn daughter of H. M. & Mary Olive Devaughn, an early pioneer family of Baldwyn.
There she grew up a somewhat reserved but charming girl beloved by family and
friends. After she came to Booneville she soon found her way into the hearts of
neighbors and a circle of devoted friends. Kindly in all her ways, a loving
wife and stepmother, she cherished the finest ideals of manhood and graced life
about her with an aura of happiness, goodness was a synonym for the live she
lived.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at five o'clock at
McMillan Funeral Home, her pastor Bro. Thad Ferrell officiating, assisted by Bro, J. D. Thompson. She loved her church, was a faithful member
of her Eastern Star and practiced the tenets of her religion in her daily life.
Even unto the end, before she lapsed into unconsciousness, friends who called
received her gracious though faint smile.
She leaves her husband Sam and stepdaughter Mrs. Harold Robertson of
this place.
Surviving also are three sisters, Mrs. George Gentry of
Baldwyn, Miss May Devaughn of
Tupelo and Mrs. R. E. McMillan of
Fort Worth, Texas; three brothers, Clint Devaughn and Townes Devaughn of
Baldwyn and J. H. Devaughn of Palo Alto, California.
