EZRA R. SEARCY
1937
It is very sad to know of the death
of the late Ezra K. Searcy, who died at his home in
Mr. Searcy was first married to
Rosa Nix, when they were a very, young couple. There was born unto them 15
children, ten of whom are still living; all mature men and women; were: Oscar
Searcy, Mattie Searcy McCreary, Ella Searcy Gable Barney Searcy, and Ora Searcy
Stennett, all citizens of Prentiss county, Mississippi; and Ruth Searcy Kay of
Birmingham, Ala.. Minnie Searcy Lawrence Searcy, and Cora Searcy Counce, all
citizens of Tishomingo County, Miss. By his second marriage there were born
children, 2 of whom are still living
with his widow, their mother, Mrs. Tina Searcy, viz: Dexter Searcy and Charley
Searcy,
Mr. Searcy left surviving him more than 40 children and grandchildren and great grand children.
Mr. Searcy was taken sick on the evening of February 12th with pneumonia, and died on the evening of the l3th.
He was buried in the old Piney Grove Graveyard, the resting place of so many of his family and friends. Funeral services were conducted by Bro. Whitner of Tishomingo. A large crowd of friends and neighbors gathered at the old burial site to pay last tribute to one who had lived an upright and an active life for so many decades in that community.
Mr. Searcy was man of unusual natural intellect, and while uneducated was well posted of all matters of general information and public interest. He was truly a man of a heart, and kind of heart that always found a way to help the old, anti the helpless, and the sick and the indigent, and to pass out kindly deeds and words of sympathy which carried the wings of the healing wand. He will be very much missed in that community, anti perhaps one of the best things that could be said for any man can be said for Mr. Searcy, that he was a mood man, an upright citizen, and had many friends who loved him and who mourn his loss.
We extend deepest sympathy to all his loved ones and assure them of our condolence in the hours of their grief.
Sincerely,
AN OLD FRIEND.
1937
It is with sadness that we announce the death of the late Mrs. Lafrona Searcy, who died on the 16th day of February at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Willie Searcy Ward, in the Bay Springs community.
Mrs. Searcy was the widow of the late W. N. Searcy and was the daughter of the late Joe Wilson, one of the very early settlers of old Cape Horn community in eastern Prentiss County long prior to the Civil War.
Mrs. Searcy had just passed her 88th birthday and had lived a long and a useful life. Her contributions to the progress and betterment of her community and her fellowman were great and varied.
She was a
devoted member of the
As a fruit of her marriage with the
said late W. N. Searcy, there was born unto them 11 children on what is known
as the Searcy Place in east Prentiss County, and five of these children
survived her, two sons, Lucius Searcy and Harden Searcy of Troupe, Texas; and
three daughters: Mrs. Carrie Searcy Goddard, Mrs. Willie Searcy Ward, both of
Dennis; and Mrs. Amanda Searcy Michael, of South Prentiss. She has one brother
who survived her, Stith Wilson of
Her grandson, Barney Searcy, undertook to collate the children, and grandchildren, and great grandchildren down to the fourth generation, and found that there were about 140. One hundred forty citizens of the background afforded by the Searcys and the Wilsons coming from one union, makes a contribution to society of which it should be proud.
The writer has known intimately this good woman for the past 45 years and cannot too earnestly express the many splendid traits of lofty character that controlled her attitude toward her fellow man and formed the objectives of her long and useful life. Hundreds have been better men and women and happier because of having known her and come it touch with her life.
She was buried the 17th at the Piney Grove of Methodist cemetery where so many of her ancestors and loved ones have long since slept and where her beloved son, Ezra Seamy, only preceded her by about
